GREEN BAY, Wisc. (TNND) — Former President Donald Trump had a crowd cracking up at a rally in Green Bay as he recounted his amusing adventure involving a garbage truck and a neon orange vest.
"We had a little fun about a time where our country is not having a lot of fun because we're, we're not doing well as a country, but we're going to be doing well very in a short while. I promise you," Trump said to his supporters.
The Republican presidential nominee took the stage sporting a neon orange vest, sharing the backstory of how the garbage truck idea came about during his flight to the rally.
"One of my people came in and said, 'Sir, you know the word garbage is the hottest thing right now out there. Sir, would you like to drive a garbage truck,'" Trump said, explaining the quick turnaround his staff managed. "I don't know how the h--- they did it so fast. I have very capable people. They put a big sign on the truck. Did you see it," he asked the crowd.
Trump recounted his initial plan to remove the vest before addressing the audience, but his staff had other ideas.
"And then they said, 'Sir, we have a vest," Trump said.
How he was going to appear on stage was also a topic of discussion before the rally.
"Should I leave my suit on and put it over the vest," he asked his staff.
They advised him not to wear the vest over his suit because it didn't "look good."
He humorously described his nerves about climbing into the garbage truck in front of the cameras.
You know, one little mistake with these guys in your political career is over. I said, 'Man, if I don't get up there this is going to be very embarrassing. These st---- people, they'll say he's cognitively and physically impaired,'" Trump said. "And I can't do that when I'm alongside of this great athlete. So, so look, so the first stair is, like, up here, 'I'm saying sh--. So, so I had the adrenaline going, and I made it.
How the decision to have the 45th President of the United States come on stage wearing a garbage vest got the crowd laughing.
He explained he wanted to take it off for the speech, but he quickly changed his mind.
The decision to keep the vest on for his speech was sealed with a compliment.
I said 'No way! I got 25,000 people standing outside. I got all these people here. There's no way I'm wearing it on stage.' They said, 'it actually makes you look thinner,'" Trump joked. "And they got me - I said I wanna wear it on stage ... I may never wear my blue jacket again. I may go in this."
Trump's attempt to draw attention was in reaction to President Joe Biden’s response to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe calling Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage" at the former president’s Madison Square Garden rally over the weekend.
On a call with a Hispanic advocacy group Biden said, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”
His words quickly sparked reaction, including from Republicans who said he was denigrating Trump supporters.
