Fact Check Team: Biden and Trump set for a pivotal debate showdown in Atlanta

WASHINGTON (TND) — The first 2024 presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is Thursday in Atlanta.

Data from the Pew Research Center shows voters find debates useful, but not necessarily determinative. Their post-election surveys from 1988-2016 found six in 10 or more voters said the debates were very or somewhat helpful in deciding which candidate to vote for.

Nielsen reports Biden and Trump's first debate in 2020 had more than 73 million people watched on television. The figure does not count the people who streamed or watched it online. Older people were the most likely to watch that first debate.

A report from Michigan State University (MSU) shows debate viewers tend to be politically engaged and likely are already backing a candidate before the debate. However, some research shows debates can affect the choices of undecided voters.

"Additionally, a lopsided debate performance or significant gaffe committed by a candidate can have a lasting effect on candidate evaluations," Dustin Carnahan, an associate professor in the Department of Communication at MSU's College of Communication Arts and Sciences, explained in the analysis.

The analysis noted the Commission on Presidential Debates has been left out of this year's planning process for the debates. The Republican National Committee withdrew from the commission in 2022, alleging unfair treatment.

The Biden and Trump campaigns independently negotiated to hold two debates. There will be no studio audience and the campaigns have agreed to mute their candidates' microphones when it is not their turn to speak.

The June debate will be the earliest since televised presidential debates began in 1960. Neither man has officially been nominated by their respective parties.

CNN will host the debate. They released an analysis pointing out the challenges of the contenders. Biden faces concerns over his mental and physical fitness. Biden, 81, is the oldest sitting president and would be 86 at the end of a second term. Trump's biggest challenge is his character, according to CNN. Trump was convicted a few weeks ago in the New York hush money trial. He also faces several other criminal cases.

"A halting or tentative performance from Biden could harden the doubts of voters who consider him too old or weak for the job. In turn, a hectoring or volatile performance from Trump – like the one he delivered in 2020’s first debate between the two men – would reinforce voter concerns that returning the former president to the Oval Office risks perpetual chaos and conflict," the analysis states.

The second debate will be held in September.
