Jeep announces pricing, fuel economy of 2017 Compass

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Though we heard these numbers earlier in the week, the embargo lifted today, and we can finally tell you pricing and fuel economy numbers for the all-new 2017 Jeep Compass.

They’re pretty impressive.

Base price for the Sport trim, front-wheel drive model is $22,090 (including destination). This is priced below what Jeep considers the competitive set of Hyundai Tucson ($23,595), Kia Sportage ($24,095) and Subaru Crosstrek ($22,570). I do need to point out that this is with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, however, and only the Crosstrek bases with a manual as well. The 6-speed automatic will add $1,500, which bumps the more popularly equipped starting price to $23,590 – just $5 less than the Tucson.

So, technically even when comparably equipped with an automatic, the Compass is still less than it’s competitive set, including the Crosstrek ($24,370 with a CVT).

The rest of the pricing for lineup is as follows:

• Sport 4X4: $23,590
• Latitude 4X2: $25,635
• Latitude 4X4: $25,635
• Trailhawk: $29,690
• Limited 4X4: $30,90

Note that the manual transmission is only available on the Sport trim and the Latitude 4X4 trim – all other base prices include the cost of either a 6- or a 9-speed transmission.

Jeep officials confirmed during the press preview that if you bought a Jeep Limited 4X4 with every option, you’d top out under $35K.

The other news item released today is fuel economy, noting that every estimated highway fuel economy is 30 mpg or greater. The city/highway/combined numbers are as follows:

• 2.4-liter, 6-speed manual 4X2: 23/32/26
• 2.4-liter, 6-speed manual 4X4: 22/31/25
• 2.4-liter, 6-speed automatic 4X2: 22/31/25
• 2.4-liter, 9-speed automatic 4X4: 22/30/25

This isn’t best-in-class because Tucson has front- and all-wheel-drive Eco versions, which boast numbers of 26/32/28 and 25/30/27 mpg respectively. But, for a compact SUV, these are really nice numbers.

The 2017 Jeep Compass will start to ship within a week, and it should fully hit dealers by mid-April.
