Hyundai, Kia recalling 1.2M vehicles for possible engine failure

(Sinclair Broadcast Group) - According to the National Highway Safety Administration website, Hyundai and Kia are issuing a recall on some of their most popular models.

The recall, which affects the Sonata, Santa Fe Sport, Optima, Sorento and Sportage, states that bearing wear may result in the engine seizing, increasing the risk of a crash.

Specifically, Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motor Company said machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.

Affected vehicles and model years include:

  • 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
  • 2012-2014 Kia Sorento
  • 2011-2014 Kia Optima
  • 2011-2013 Kia Sportage

Hyundai and Kia dealers will inspect the engine and replace the engine short block as necessary for free. The Hyundai recall is expected to begin on May 19 and the Kia recall will begin on May 25.

A total of 1,190,160 vehicles is affected by this recall.
