On the heels of media days at the North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled the new 2018 Mustang. In addition to styling and tech updates, the big news is the high level of customization this refreshed model offers.

The new 12-inch all-digital, LCD dashboard screen offers three separate views, and the Mustang MyMode function allows owners to save their favorite drive settings, including suspension and steering preferences. Even the exhaust note can be adjusted based on preference. Another customization option includes 12 distinct wheel choices.

On the performance side of the refresh, all models will get new shock absorbers and a new cross-axis joint in the rear suspension. MagneRide damper technology will also be available with the Mustang Performance Package.

The 2018 Mustang will have a two-engine lineup: the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder and the 5.0-liter V-8, which has been completely reworked. Two transmissions will also be available: an upgraded 6-speed manual transmission and an all-new 10-speed automatic.

Though no detailed specs have been released, the press release for the 2018 Mustang clearly states that there will be a power increase for the V-8 engine. The current Mustang GT delivers 435 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

In a bit of a departure from tradition, rather than launching the new Mustang during the press preview at the Detroit auto show, Ford decided to bring the new Mustang “straight to the people.” According to Joe Hinrichs, president of the Americas for Ford Motor Co., Ford wanted to tap the huge Mustang fan base for the reveal, opting to introduce the muscle car across multiple social media platforms instead.

To further tap into social media warm feelies, Ford enlisted Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to participate in the reveal by giving away one of the first models to Marlene Rodriguez, an army veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

The Ford Mustang Facebook page has 8.4 million likes, and the video reveal posted today to Johnson’s page and shared by both Ford and Ford Mustang pages already has more than 1 million views.

The 2018 Ford Mustang is slated to go on sale this fall.
