5 things to know about the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque enters its second generation for the 2020 model year, and while it retains its compact size, it adds a little more capability, cargo volume and visibility.
Here are five things you need to know about this all-new vehicle.
Available Clear Sight Ground View is cool
One of the coolest features on the new Evoque is the Clear Sight Ground View monitor, which shows you what you are driving over.
Through a series of cameras that surround the vehicle, an image is pieced together to give a clear view of the road surface beneath your tires. I had the opportunity to test this while driving over a railroad bridge, and it helped ensure my tires stayed on the track.
But this will be useful in both urban and off-road situations to avoid sharp rocks or low-lying curbs that might damage wheels and tires.
Sustainable materials are available
As Land Rover is trying to appeal to a younger, more eco-conscious buyer with this lowest-priced Range Rover, Evoque will offer sustainable interior material choices such as eucalyptus, Dinamica suedecloth and Kvadrat wool, which will have a high-end tactile feel, making it just as luxurious as a leather-optioned surface.
The MHEV is about the power
The all-wheel-drive 2020 Evoque will have two powertrain options: a straight gasoline model and a mild hybrid electric vehicle. Both will come equipped with a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, but the MHEV adds a 48-volt battery.
The difference for this model isn’t about fuel savings as both models average about 23 mpg in combined driving. The difference is all about the power boost.
The straight gasoline version will be dubbed the P250 model and will deliver 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. It will be available in the S and SE trims.
The MHEV version, however, will be dubbed the P300 model and will deliver 296 horsepower and 295 horsepower. It will be available in all the R-Dynamic trims.
The MHEV also shaves 0.07 seconds off the 0-to-60-mph time.
Go anywhere capability
While the Evoque is designed to be an urban vehicle, it’s still a Land Rover and comes with Land Rover capability. All-wheel drive is standard, and for the first time, Terrain Response is included on Evoque -- also standard.
This system has five different drive modes – including General, ECO, Sand, Grass-Gravel-Snow and Mud & Ruts – in addition to a new “Auto” mode that allows the vehicle to select the best mode for current conditions.
The new Evoque boasts stats such as an 8.3-inch ground clearance, a maximum wading depth of 23.6 inches and an approach angle of 25 degrees.
Available features to increase off-road capability include an adaptive dynamics system, gradient release control, all-terrain progress control and the aforementioned Clear sight Ground View.
Base price is about $43K
The current Evoque has a base price of $42,795 including destination, and it’s nice to see that the new Evoque doesn’t have a drastic price increase, even though it adds more standard content.
The base 2020 Evoque S will start at $43,645, including the $995 destination fee. The top-tier R-Dynamic HSE trim will start at $56,795.
For the 2020 model year only, there will also be a tricked out First Edition trim priced at $57,845. It will be available only as a P250 model.
The Bottom Line:
The new Evoque is a nice evolution from the previous generation’s model. It has more technology and sleeker lines as well as a little more cargo and interior volume.
It’s an attractive vehicle inside and out, and it gives more up-scale sustainable material options for those on the eco side of the spectrum.
I really like the power boost offered with the MHEV system, and as a city dweller, I fully appreciate the compact size and added capability that will tackle some decent off-roading as well as urban potholes.
