'X-Men' star James McAvoy attacked by stranger in Toronto
James McAvoy was randomly attacked by a stranger in a Toronto bar on Monday while he was in town celebrating the premiere of his directorial debut, “California Schemin’.”
The “X-Men” star and his wife Lisa Liberati had attended the film’s premiere on Saturday during the Toronto International Film Festival.
On Monday, McAvoy was at a bar called Charlotte’s Room when he was hit by a man at around 11:55 p.m., according to a report from People Magazine. McAvoy tried to deescalate the situation while others acted to remove the man.
"James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out," a source close to McAvoy told the outlet. "James' back was to him and the man just punched him."
The source added that McAvoy stayed at the bar following the incident and was able to laugh it off with staff and other patrons.
McAvoy’s film, “California Schemin’,” is based on the true story of two Scottish men who pretended to be Americans in order to become hip-hop stars.
The 46-year-old opened up about making his directorial debut to People, saying, "I've loved telling stories as an actor for 30 years. It's an extension of that. I now love telling stories as a director because I get more tools with which to tell those stories. It was a privilege."
