Weekend Box Office - June 9-11, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - “Wonder Woman” easily held off the competition at the domestic box office, scoring $57 million in its second weekend. That’s a healthy 45-percent drop from its opening weekend, giving the film a domestic total of $205 million. The film continues to do well overseas as well, as its total has now pushed past $230 million. Worldwide, the film has now earned $435 million.

Tom Cruise and Universal Pictures were hoping to unseat Diana Prince and launch the Dark Universe with their reboot of “The Mummy,” but will have to settle for a second-place finish with $32 million. Earlier in the week, estimates had the film coming in closer to $40 million, but poor reviews and the almost-universal acclaim for “Wonder Woman” pushed those estimates down to $35 million on Friday. However, the film performed well overseas, bringing in an additional $141 million for a respectable worldwide total of $174 million.

In third place is “Captain Underpants” with $12.3 million. That brings the domestic total to $44.5 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” managed $10.7 million in its third weekend. The domestic total is a disappointing $135 million, but the massive international numbers have helped to push the film to nearly $600 million worldwide. The domestic numbers are troubling, but the film, which was budgeted at $230 million, will still turn a profit and pave the way for another sequel that will likely arrive in the not-so-distant future.

In fifth place is “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” with $6.2 million. The domestic total now sits at $366 million. I’ve yet to see international totals for this sequel, but I expect its worldwide total to be around $835 million by Monday morning.
