What to watch in theaters and at home this weekend Sept. 15-17, 2023

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — So, what are you in the mood for? You've got plenty of new options this weekend. This week's major theatrical release is the Agatha Christie inspired "A Haunting in Venice" with Kenneth Branagh returning in the role of master detective Poirot. I love the off-kilter and the film’s 1970s horror flourishes. It's a creepy warmup for the Halloween season.

Those of you staying in can now rent or buy the mega-hit "Barbie" from their favorite digital retailers, kick back with "Fast X" on Peacock, return to the chaotic newsroom of Apple TV+'s "The Morning Show" or dive into Paramount+'s British thriller "The Gold" (debuts on Sunday). There's more of course. There always is (until the impact of the strikes kicks in). Here's a look at some of your choices.

A Haunting in Venice (In Theaters)

Studio Synopsis: Set in eerie, post World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve, “A Haunting in Venice” is a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

Studio Synopsis: To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

Fast X (Peacock)

Studio Synopsis: Ever since their saga started on the streets of L.A.'s underground racing scene, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have overcome impossible odds to outsmart, out-nerve and outdrive every foe. Yet when the team took down a nefarious kingpin back in Brazil, they had no idea his son Dante (Jason Momoa) was watching from the shadows. More lethal than any other enemy they've faced, Dante now rises as a terrifying new nemesis who's fueled by revenge and determined to shatter their family and destroy everything and everyone Dom loves. From London and Brazil to Antarctica and Rome, new alliances are forged and old enemies resurface. But everything changes after Dom discovers his 8-year-old son is Dante's ultimate target.

The Morning Show: Season Three (Apple TV+)

Studio Synopsis: In season three of “The Morning Show,” the stakes are high as the future of the network is thrown into question and loyalties are pushed to the brink when a tech titan takes an interest in UBA. Unexpected alliances form, private truths are weaponized and everyone is forced to confront their core values both in and out of the newsroom. Along with Witherspoon and Aniston, the star-studded season three ensemble cast is led by Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Jon Hamm, Nicole Beharie and Julianna Margulies.

Talk to Me (Digital Retailers)

Studio Synopsis: When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits with an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill and high-stakes party game - until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. The eye-popping, nightmarish debut from Australian twin filmmakers and horror sensations Danny and Michael Philippou.

The Gold (Paramount+)

Studio Synopsis: Inspired by the real-life events that took place on November 26, 1983, when six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport and inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth 26 million pounds. According to detectives, what started as a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery became a seminal event in British criminal history that’s remarkable not only for the scale of the theft – at the time the biggest in world history – but for its wider legacy. The disposal of the bullion caused the birth of large-scale international money laundering; provided the dirty money that helped fuel the London Docklands property boom; united blue- and white-collar criminals; and left controversy and murder in its wake.

Theater Camp (Digital Retailers)

Studio Synopsis: Tony Award winner Ben Platt ("Dear Evan Hansen") and Molly Gordon ("Booksmart") star in the original comedy "Theater Camp" as Amos and Rebecca-Diane – lifelong best friends and drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. When clueless tech-bro Troy (Jimmy Tatro) arrives to run the property - into the ground - Amos, Rebecca-Diane and production manager Glenn (Noah Galvin) band together with the staff and young students, staging a masterpiece to keep their beloved summer camp afloat. "Theater Camp" is directed by Molly Gordon & Nick Lieberman from a screenplay by Noah Galvin, Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman & Ben Platt, based on their short film.

Elevator Game (Shudder)

Studio Synopsis: Based on the online phenomenon of the same name, ELEVATOR GAME follows socially awkward teenager Ryan, who ingratiates himself into a group of recent high school graduates that run an online web series debunking urban legends. But Ryan has a secret: His sister disappeared months earlier, and he believes they – and a dangerous online challenge called ‘The Elevator Game’ – were responsible. To play the game, you must ride the elevator in a specific sequence, invoking a supernatural creature called ‘The 5th Floor Woman’. In an attempt to gain more information as to the whereabouts of his sister, Ryan persuades the group to play the game once more, and risk unleashing the most fearsome consequences imaginable.

Between Two Worlds (Kino Now)

Studio Synopsis: Marianne Winckler (Juliette Binoche), a well-known author, goes to live in northern France to research for her new book on the subject of job insecurity. Without revealing her true identity, she gets hired as a cleaner, working with a group of other women. In this new role, she experiences financial instability and social invisibility first-hand. But she also discovers mutual assistance and solidarity, strong bonds shared by these behind-the-scenes working women.

Kelce (Prime)

Studio Synopsis: "Kelce" is an intimate and emotional feature-length documentary that chronicles Philadelphia Eagles team captain and All-Pro center Jason Kelce’s 2022-23 season, which began with him confronting one of the most challenging decisions any professional athlete will ever face—is now the time to hang it up? The film culminates with the historic Super Bowl face-off against his younger brother Travis Kelce.

The Other Black Girl (Hulu)

Studio Synopsis: Nella, an editorial assistant, is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she's excited when Hazel is hired; but as Hazel's star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company.

Suspiria (The Criterion Channel)

Studio Synopsis: Jessica Harper (PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN) stars in this frightening tale of a young student who uncovers dark and horrific secrets within the walls of a famous German dance academy. What spirals out from that simple premise is one of the most powerful and hallucinatory nightmares ever captured on celluloid!
