Hugh Jackman’s next role is a wild and wooly one.

The “Song Sung Blue” stars in the trailer for his newest film, titled “The Sheep Detectives,” in which he plays a shepherd named George who cares deeply for his flock, even reading murder mysteries to them every night.

Of course, George assumes the sheep don’t really understand what he’s reading, but the animals actually are paying attention and argue amongst themselves about the whodunits and other tales.

According to the official synopsis, “When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. The local cop Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun), on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life, so the sheep conclude they will have to solve it themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn't as simple as it appears in books.”

The flock of sheep is voiced by an all-star cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, and Brett Goldstein.

Additional human characters are played by Emma Thompson, Nicholas Galitzine, Hong Chau, Tosin Cole, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Conleth Hill.

The trailer is actually quite adorable, kind of giving off “Babe” vibes but with sheep at the center, running through the small town and trying to do right by the shepherd who did right by them.

The film was written by Craig Mazin, better known for his deathly serious TV work like “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us,” and directed by Kyle Balda.

“The Sheep Detectives” is in theaters May 8.
