Weekend box office January 11 - 13, 2019

Early expectations for “The Upside,” a remake of the popular French film “The Intouchables” that was shelved for nearly a year in the wake of The Weinstein Company’s financial issues before being bought by STX Entertainment, had the film opening to a modest $11 million. Those predictions proved to be completely off the mark as the Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston comedy will finish the weekend with $19.5 million.

That pushes “Aquaman” to second place with $17 million. However, Warner Bros. can take comfort in the fact that the superhero movie has now surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide. How big is that for DC Comics? “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” topped out at $873 million and “Wonder Woman” finished with $821 million.

A Dog’s Way Home,” a family-friendly drama about a dog that makes a 400-mile journey to find its home, came in at $11.3 million. That’s slightly below expectations, but nothing too disconcerting.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” takes fourth place with $9 million, a drop of just 31 percent from last week. Worldwide the animated feature has now made more than $300 million.

Rounding out the top five is “Escape Room” with $9 million. In just two weeks the mystery thriller has earned $32 million against a $9 million budget.
