Weekend box office: Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' Zerg rushes the world

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) -Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” sits atop the domestic box office with weekend earnings estimated to be $41 million. That lifts its domestic total to $52 million since its early Wednesday release. That’s on par with what most were expecting from the film and while not a runaway hit, I can’t imagine Warner Bros. feeling too uneasy about the film’s future. That’s particularly true when you consider that internationally the film performed very well, bringing in an additional $128 million. The worldwide total sits at an estimated $181 million. That covers the film’s budget, but it’ll need to total at least $300 million worldwide before it starts to see any sort of profit.

Tyler Perry’s new film, “Acrimony,” outperformed expectations with a very healthy $17 million weekend. The movie sees Taraji P. Henson playing a wife who seeks revenge on her cheating husband.

“Black Panther” managed to sneak its way into third place with $11 million as “I Can Only Imagine” and “Pacific Rim: Uprising” failed to match expectations.

The faith-based drama “I Can Only Imagine,” brought in $10.7 million and now earned $55 million against a modest $7-million budget. You won’t hear anyone at Roadside Attractions complaining about the film’s performance.

However, you might find a few disgruntled executives at Universal Pictures as “Pacific Rim: Uprising” fell 67 percent and finished the weekend with only $9 million for a domestic total of $45 million. I’ve yet to see the film’s international totals for the weekend, which should be considerably better than the domestic, but things don’t look good.

The week’s most impressive performance, however, goes to Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” which earned $2.8 million from only 168 theaters. That’s a $17,000-per-theater average. In contrast, “Ready Player One” averaged $9,733 per screen.
