Weekend box office: 'Avengers: Infinity War' shatters worldwide records

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - Early numbers have “Avengers: Infinity War” opening to a domestic total of $250 million. That surpasses the record-breaking opening of $248 million of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” International numbers for “Infinity War” are equally astounding as those numbers are expected to reach $380 million. That elevates the worldwide total to the dizzy heights of $630 million. That’s a record as well.

Earlier this year, “Black Panther” rocked the box office with a $202 million domestic opening that blew past all expert predictions. Factor in the international numbers and the film earned $360 million over its first weekend. The fact that “Infinity War” has posted better numbers isn’t a surprise, but the fact that the film broke through the $230 million glass ceiling is quite a feat. “Black Panther” has earned $1.3 billion worldwide and, despite “Deadpool 2” opening in only three weeks, I expect that “Infinity War” will be able to match that. But will it match the $1.5 billion that “The Avengers” earned in 2012? We’ll have a better idea next weekend.

Speaking of “Black Panther,” the film made its way back into the top five with $4 million this weekend.

“A Quiet Place” made $10.65 million this weekend. The horror film from John Krasinski about a family stalked by blind alien creatures that hunt by sound has now earned $148 million domestically. Considering the film was made for only $17 million, that’s a tremendous total. International totals push the worldwide earnings in the area of $235 million. Congratulations Paramount, your willingness to take risks is finally paying off.

“I Feel Pretty” fell only 49 percent for a domestic weekend of $8.1 million. Amy Schumer’s newest comedy has now earned $29 million.

“Rampage” fell 65 percent with a weekend total of $7.1 million. Domestically the film has struggled somewhat. With a current total of $77 million, the film will fall short of $100 million. It's international numbers, however, boost the worldwide total to $332 million against a $120 million budget.

“Super Troopers 2,” the comedy from Broken Lizard, fell 76 percent for a weekend total of $3.6 million. Domestically, the film has earned $22 million against a $13.5 million budget. That’s enough to make the sequel profitable. So, I don’t think you’ll find anyone at Fox Searchlight complaining too much. Particularly when you consider that the original film, which was made for only $3 million, finished with a worldwide total of $22 million in 2002.

“Truth or Dare?” brought in $3.2 million. The low-budget horror has now earned $35 million domestically.
