Weekend box office: 'A Quiet Place' sneaks back into 1st place

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - This year there have already been a few box office surprises. The biggest of those unexpected success stories remains “A Quiet Place,” as the horror thriller made its way back to the top spot after a week of playing second fiddle to “Rampage.” The popular movie about a family hunted by an alien monster directed by and starring John Krasinski with Emily Blunt and Millicent Simmonds finished with $22 million and has now earned $132 million in America alone.

“Rampage” is still in the rumble with $21 million in America. Worldwide, the film has a solid total of $283 million. The bulk of that total coming from China, where the film has made over $100 million.

Third place goes to Amy Schumer’s new comedy “I Feel Pretty” with $16.22 million. The film finds Schumer starring as a woman who finds a new sense of self-esteem after knocking herself out at an inspirational spinning class. Audiences gave the film a “B+” grade while most critics, not including this one, offered negative reviews. It is most certainly a flawed piece of work, but the middle section of the film works to good effect.

The surprise of the week is “Super Troopers 2.” Most experts had the film finishing the weekend at or below $10 million. The crass comedy from Broken Lizard climbed all the way up to fourth place with an extremely impressive $14.7 million. I didn’t think much of the movie myself, but according to CinemaScore, audiences graded it a “B+.”

“Truth or Dare,” the latest horror frilm from Blumhouse Productions, drew $7.9 million. Its totals are $30 domestic, $38 worldwide.

Next week sees the release of "Avengers: Infinity War." With "Deadpool 2" and "Solo: A Star Wars Story" looming in the not-so-distant future, I suspect that the busy marketplace is going to have an impact on the film's bottom line.
