The X-Men take on one of their own in a trailer released Wednesday for the next film featuring the mutant superheroes.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” picks up where last year’s “Apocalypse” left off, with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) having taken her powers to a higher level that she may not be able to control. She gains even more power in the new film after being possessed by a cosmic force during a mission in space, creating a threat the X-Men are unprepared and perhaps unable to fight.

Producers are hoping this adaptation of the comic’s “Dark Phoenix Saga” will be better received than the 2006 attempt to bring the story to the big screen in “X-Men: The Last Stand.”

In addition to Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, and Evan Peters reprise their roles from “Apocalypse.” Also returning is Michael Fassbender as Magneto, who the trailer suggests will have a significant part to play in the effort to save Jean Grey from herself, the government, and some ill-tempered aliens.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” directed by Simon Kinberg, is scheduled for release on Feb. 14, 2019.
