WASHINGTON (Circa) -- The star of the number one movie in the box office at the moment used to be a television host in his previous life.

Henry Golding, star of "Crazy Rich Asians," was the host of a travel series on BBC World News, TVNewser reports. His YouTube page still contains a video reel of him traveling throughout various countries across the world.

Golding visited countries such as Thailand, Japan and India to host different docuseries about his experiences and the region. As recently as 2017, Golding traveled to the Asian island of Borneo to "discover his tribal roots" for a special that aired on the Discovery Channel in Southeast Asia.

In an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Golding says he became an actor after he was discovered by the movie's director John Chu via Instagram.

"I see this notification pop up on Instagram: “Jon Chu is Following You.” And I know the hype that’s been building around this film, and a lot of my friends had read for it," Golding said. "I was still in the frame of mind of being a travel host and presenter, so I didn’t think anything of it.

Chu asked Golding to do a read for him and after a second try, Chu eventually picked him for the role Nick Young.

"Crazy Rich Asians" is in theaters now.
