Wakanda once more: 'Black Panther' nears $900 million worldwide

Weekend box office: March 2-4, 2018

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - “Black Panther” enjoyed another robust domestic weekend as it brought in $65 million. That brings its domestic total to $501 million and sees its worldwide number sit just below $900 million. Both totals have the film sitting atop the domestic and worldwide charts. The closest contender, “Fifty Shades Freed,” has a domestic total of $95 million and a worldwide total of $346 million.

In a distant second place is spy thriller “Red Sparrow” with $17 million. That's nearly as much as Jennifer Lawrence's previous film, "Mother!," made during its entire domestic run and is on par with what most experts were expecting, butitsinternational total of $26 million is more important. The film cost nearly $70 million to make and its worldwide total is currently $43 million. Having opened in most of its markets, “Red Sparrow” will need to hold well over the next few weeks if it wants to make a profit.

“Death Wish,” a remake of the Charles Bronson franchise with Bruce Willis taking on the role of a vigilante father, made $13 million. Directed by Eli Roth, I found “Death Wish” to be too uneven in tone as it tried to present a story that is set in the real world but also features an ample amount of cartoon violence that might work in a horror film, or an action film with a more stylized approach, but here it just undermines the film’s message.

Fourth place goes to the adult comedy “Game Night” with $10.7 million, a domestic total of $ 33.5 million. International numbers push the worldwide total to nearly $50 million against a production budget of $37 million.

“Peter Rabbit” wraps up the top five with $10 million for a domestic total of nearly $85 million. The film has only opened in a handful of international locations, with the U.K. debut scheduled for March 16. Nonetheless, the movie has earned a worldwide total of $101 million, which suggests anything it earns from here on out should be a profit.

For those who are curious, “Annihilation” finished in sixth place with $5.6 million. The film has now earned $20 million after two weeks.

Next week sees the release of "A Wrinkle in Time," which will likely push "Black Panther" down to second place.
