Tom Cruise dances to Beyoncé with a Hollywood icon before winning honorary Oscar
We knew Tom Cruise could do some serious stunts, but who knew he could dance?
The “Mission Impossible” star got down on the dance floor to Beyoncé’s version of “Before I Let Go” Saturday night before the Governors Awards, where he picked up an Academy Honorary Award Oscar.
The pre-awards celebration was held at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, owned by Debbie Allen who was also honored at the Governors Awards the next night.
Tom and Debbie are having a blast on the dance floor, moving and grooving. DJ D-Nice shared one video, showing the whole crowd getting into the music, writing, “Last night was a vibe! I kept the vibes flowing as we celebrated @therealdebbieallen in a major way.”
He added, “@tomcruise is invited to the barbecue!”
Jenifer Lewis and Debbie’s sister “Cosby Show” star Phylicia Rashad also joined in the celebrations as Tom and Debbie got down.
The celebrations continued the next night as Tom, Debbie, Wynn Thomas, and Dolly Parton (who appeared via video) accepted their honorary Oscars.
Cruise gave a heartfelt acceptance speech on his love for movies, saying, “The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form."
During her speech, Debbie said, “Movies were a way in for me, for my sister [Phylicia Rashad]. We used to watch all the movies, and our imaginations could go and wonder, and we could see ourselves. This is such a profound moment. I’m a student of the classics at Howard University, where I translated Homer and Aeschylus and Sophocles. And I’m acquainted with fate and destiny and deus ex machina and tragic flaw and prophecy. I proclaimed Misty Copeland to be a prophecy come true when she retired from American Ballet Theater. And I’m compelled to call that up again tonight because prophecy comes true. And so maybe I’m one of them too.”
