“Home Alone” has been a Christmas classic since its premiere in 1990.

You know the story: Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin in his breakout role) gets left behind at his home when his family goes on a trip during Christmas and ends up having to defend himself and the house from bumbling criminals.

That seems straightforward enough, but “Home Alone” has generated a lot of conversation over the years, and naturally, the internet has delivered some plausible and, more often, wild answers to some of the movie’s biggest questions.

Take a look at some of the craziest fan theories below!

Uncle Frank is the Real Villain

“Look what you did, you little jerk!” No, look what YOU DID, Uncle Frank! Kevin McAllister’s Uncle Frank (Gerry Bamman) doesn’t seem to care one bit for the kid or the family at large, which is why some fans on Reddit theorize that he actually hired Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), aka the Wet Bandits, to rob the McAllister family home. Some people even believe that he orchestrated things so that Kevin would be left behind as part of the plan.

If nothing else, Uncle Frank is content to let the rest of the family foot the bill for everything, from the trip to the pizza dinner (as seen when he conveniently mentions he only has traveler’s checks when it’s time to pay for the pizza delivery).

But speaking of money

Kevin’s Dad is in the Mafia

How did the McAllisters afford a lengthy trip to Paris for a large family, on top of their expensive looking home in the Chicago suburbs? If you believe the internet, it’s because Kevin’s dad, Peter (John Heard), is involved in the mafia.

The internet’s evidence on this one is that when Harry visits the home disguised as a police officer to prepare for the robbery, Peter’s dad asks, “Am I under arrest?” Now why would a simple family man ask such a question? If you buy into multiple Reddit theories, Kevin’s dad is deep in the mafia scene in Chicago.

A Deal with the Devil

This one is just plain hard to believe when the devil in question is being played by the late, great John Candy. But according to Reddit user Drewgarr, Candy’s character of Gus might actually be the devil in disguise. Their theory goes that after Kevin’s mom, Kate (Catherine O’Hara), declares she would "sell her soul to the devil himself" to get back home to her son, Gus appears out of nowhere to offer help.

He has a van at the ready and is able to give her a ride home, not to mention the airport she’s stuck at in Scranton Pennsylvania is apparently near a crossroads, a common location for the Devil to make an offer to you. Plus, even though Kate makes it home to Kevin first, the rest of the family arrives just minutes later, meaning she would have arrived at the same time if she had just wait, meaning she sold her soul for nothing, exactly as the Devil would want.

This one’s a hard pill to swallow because, c’mon! It’s John Candy! No way John Candy is the devil!!!

Back to the Future

Kevin’s neighbor, Old Man Marley (Roberts Blossom), is an imposing figure who ends up coming to Kevin’s aid and teaching him a lesson about appreciating family. Because he always seems to be in the right place at the right time to help Kevin, one Redditor thinks Marley is actually a version of Kevin from the future.

They feel that Marley (aka Future Kevin) had issues with his family caused by the events of the film and wanted to travel back to help his younger self avoid his lonely fate. The theory falters a little when you remember that at the end of the movie, we see Kevin witness Marley reunite with his own estranged family (unless that’s just the power of time travel giving him a vision of the future!).

A Horror Villain is Born

Kevin has a natural skill with creating elaborate and violent traps for the criminals trying to break into his home, all created with everyday items in a feat of engineering that seems almost impossible for a 10-year-old.

But that natural ability may take a darker turn, according to one Reddit theory. Some people believe that Kevin will grow up to become the Jigsaw killer from the “Saw” movies. As the theory goes, they both create traps to punish criminals and have troubled relationships with their families.

When you look at some of the traps Kevin creates, they would be capable of seriously injuring or killing a person in real life, but that does kind of suck the fun out of an otherwise lighthearted Christmas slapstick comedy.
