WASHINGTON (SBG) — When audiences last saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the final moments of 2019’s “Far From Home,” his secret identity had been revealed to the world and he had been framed for murder.
Things do not appear to get appreciably better in the next entry in the series. The first trailer for “Spider-man: No Way Home” shows the scrutiny of being a public superhero has upended Peter Parker’s life, leading him to seek mystical assistance from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Against Wong’s advice, Strange agrees to cast a spell intended to make the world forget Peter is Spider-Man. Instead, it apparently unravels the multiverse and places reality at risk.
It also tears down the barriers between the continuity of the current Spider-Man trilogy and previous iterations of the character. The trailer seemingly confirms the return of Willem Defoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, both from the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films of the early 2000s.
“Hello, Peter,” Molina says in the trailer’s final shot.
Maguire is also rumored to make an appearance in “No Way Home,” though he is not seen in the trailer. Also absent is Jamie Foxx, who is expected to reprise his role as Electro from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
More surprises surely await when “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” hits theaters on Dec. 17. Directed by Jon Watts, the film also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, and Marisa Tomei.
