Rob Reiner's son in custody after the actor and his wife found dead in LA home
(TNND) — One of Rob Reiner's sons was taken into custody on Sunday night after the famed actor and director of films like “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride,” and his wife, Michele, were found dead from an alleged stabbing in their home.
Nick Reiner, 32, is being held on no bail, according to online records for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said during a Monday news conference that the son was arrested and "booked for murder."
Law enforcement sources previously told the Los Angeles Times that it was being investigated as a homicide, and a family member was being interviewed in connection with the case.
In the semi-autobiographical 2016 film "Being Charlie," Rob and Nick explored their difficult relationship and Nick's struggles with drugs.
A spokesperson for the Reiner family addressed the tragedy Sunday evening, saying:
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.
TMZ first broke the news that authorities were investigating reports of two people found dead in the home owned by Reiner. The outlet later confirmed it was the Reiners, reportedly stabbed to death, though the investigation is ongoing.
According to TMZ, the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the home located in the Brentwood neighborhood around 3:30 pm PST with a request for medical aid. The outlet reported that authorities found a man, approximately 78, and a woman, approximately 68.
The Los Angeles Police Department arrived about 10 minutes after the LAFD, and an investigation into the deaths began.
Rob Reiner, the son of comedian and director Carl Reiner, made a name for himself with his breakout role as “Meathead” on “All in the Family,” earning two Emmy Awards.
He continued to act on and off throughout the rest of his career, most recently in several episodes of “The Bear,” but he's best known as an acclaimed director behind many iconic movies.
He directed the coming-of-age classic “Stand By Me,” the romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” the fantasy favorite “The Princess Bride,” the psychological horror “Misery,” and the courtroom drama “A Few Good Men,” to name just a few from his prolific career.
His most recent directing project was the sequel to his 1984 comedy, “This is Spinal Tap,” titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.”
In his personal life, Reiner was married to fellow TV icon Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981, adopting Marshall’s daughter from a previous relationship, Tracy Reiner.
He met his second wife, who was found alongside him in their home on Sunday night, in 1989, after they met on the set of “When Harry Met Sally.”
The couple shared three children, Jake, Nick, and Romy.
"This is a devastating loss for our city and our country," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. "Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice."
California Gov. Gavin Newsom also addressed Reiner's death, saying he is "heartbroken by the tragic loss."
"His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others — and encouraging us to dream bigger," Newsom wrote in a tribute on X. "That empathy extended well beyond his films. Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights — from taking on Big Tobacco, fighting for marriage equality, to serving as a powerful voice in early education. He made California a better place through his good works."
