Review: “Knives Out” was an unusual mystery in that it was as ridiculously entertaining the second time as it was during the first. It didn’t matter that I knew who did or didn’t do the killing. The filmmaking was simply sublime. In retrospect, even those of us who loved it didn’t appreciate it as much as we should.
Surely a sequel was a good idea, right? Netflix certainly thought so. 30 minutes into “The Glass Onion,” I wasn’t so sure. I won’t go into specifics. The elements were in place but something was off. I braced myself for disappointment.
Disappointment never arrived as what I initially found distracting was revealed to be a purposeful misdirection.
I love being wrong. Or, as in this case, right for the wrong reason.
The cast is great. Daniel Craig is sublime, Janelle Monae is second-level. She gives the breakout performance that should surprise no one who has been paying attention.
I left the theater full of energy, buzzing off the experience, wishing I could immediately watch the film a second time.
Catch “The Glass Onion” in theaters with a crowd at least once before revisiting the film when it arrives on Netflix next month. You’ll be thankful that you did.
