Police: No charges filed in incident involving Britney Spears, security for Wembanyama

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Police say no charges will be filed in an incident involving pop music icon Britney Spears and San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.

"The LVMPD has concluded its investigation of the alleged battery that occurred on July 5, 2023, at 11 p.m., in the 3700 block of Las Vegas Boulevard. No charges will be filed against the person involved," Las Vegas police said in a statement Friday.

In an incident first reported by TMZ, Spears approached Wembanyama near a restaurant at the Aria Hotel and Casino. TMZ said Spears tried to get his attention and touched him, and a security guard struck her in the face.

Wembanyama said he believed Spears grabbed him from behind, but Spears said in a statement posted to Instagram that she "simply tapped him on the shoulder" and the guard "backhanded me in the face."

TMZ also obtained video of the incident, which shows Spears walking up to Wembanyama. As she reaches out to him, a security guard waves his arm back against Spears' arm, apparently knocking her hand back into her face.

According to a copy of the police incident report filed, Spears' entertainment manager relayed to police what happened. A member of Spears' security team also told officers that Wembanyama's guard "pushed Britney's hand off of the Spurs player without looking and not knowing who was tapping him on the shoulder."

A person then came over to Spears about the incident and they both apologized to the other, two members of Spears' security detail said. That person's name is redacted from the version of the released report.

Detectives reviewed surveillance video and the footage showed Spears going to tap Wembanyama on the shoulder, police wrote in the report.

When she touched the player, [the security guard] pushes her hand off of the player without looking which causes Britney's hand to hit herself in the face," the report states.

Spears has said she hopes to get a public apology either from Wembanyama, his security or the Spurs.
