Phil Collins has '24-hour live-in' nursing care as he faces multiple health challenges
Phil Collins is struggling with his health ahead of his 75th birthday.
Collins opened up about his care needs that stem from a spinal injury he suffered in 2007. The injury caused damage to vertebrae in his upper neck and lasting nerve damage, impacting his ability to perform.
"You know, I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do. I've had challenges with my knee... I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me,” he told Zoe Ball for the “BBC Eras: Phil Collins” podcast.
Collins has undergone five surgeries on his knee and says he has one “that works,” adding, "I can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever.”
The “In the Air Tonight” singer also spoke about his touring experiences and how he made his health worse by “drinking too much.”
"I enjoyed coming off tour. Coming off the road... I thought, right, I'm gonna do all those things that I couldn't do," Collins said. "I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital."
The incidents pushed him to stop drinking, and he recently celebrated two years of sobriety.
"It's just been a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years," he said. "But it's all right now."
