First-time host Cynthia Erivo kicked off the 78th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday night from Radio City Music Hall.
The ‘Wicked’ star opened the show by making her way through the backstage warren, running into people offering her ideas and advice until she reached the stage. That’s where Oprah Winfrey was waiting to give the emcee some words of wisdom: “The only thing you need to do is just be yourself.” Then, Oprah sticks out her pointer finger, which Cynthia grabs, giving a nod to her and Ariana Grande’s ‘Wicked holding space’ meme, making the audience burst into laughter.
During her opening number, the Tony winner made her way into the audience while singing her own rendition of “Sometimes All You Need is a Song,” putting the microphone to the face of all the stars watching from their seats. Kristen Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, and Adam Lambert were able to showcase their chops, thanks to Cynthia, for a fun opening number!
Then, in the middle of the show, Cynthia made her way over to Oprah once more, “Miss Oprah, as a change of pace, I thought we should give you a gift. Check under your chair.” As the former talk show host reaches under and grabs a gift bag, she begins to thank the Tony's host, “Oh my, thank you so much,” as she pulls gummy bears and Junior Mints out of the bag. “What’s the other thing? What’s that other thing in there?” Cynthia urges Oprah to keep going.
Oprah then pulls out a tiny red toy car, to which Cynthia says, “You get a car” in the most deadpan way possible.
The Tony Awards broadcast featured performances by the casts of Sunset Boulevard and Death Becomes Her, a Hamilton reunion, and first-time nominees like Nicole Scherzinger, Darren Criss, and Cole Escola became Tony winners!
Closing out the show, Cynthia Erivo got on the mic once more to deliver a one-of-a-kind performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,’ from Dreamgirls, changing the lyrics to make it more ‘closing out the Tonys friendly,’ listen below!
