Along with fresh glimpses of "Captain America: Civil War," a Harry Potter spinoff, and a new King Kong movie, the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night revealed the latest trailer for "Suicide Squad."

Based on the DC Comics series, "Suicide Squad" features a team of supervillains sent on dangerous missions by the government. It stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Cara Delevigne, Viola Davis, and many, many others.

The new trailer firmly establishes the film in the DC cinematic universe, with several quick shots of Batman in action and the rationale for the team's existence apparently being rooted in fear of Superman. It also plays up the role of Leto's Joker and showcases Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn.

Fans on Twitter seemed particularly excited by the Batman and Joker footage.

After the divisive reaction to the grim, humorless "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," rumors spread in recent weeks that the cast and crew of "Suicide Squad" were returning to the set to add more jokes into the film.

Director David Ayer rejected that claim, tweeting Monday, "#SuicideSquad 'reshoots for humor' is silly. When a studio loves your movie and asks what else you want, go for it!"

Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang in the film, told Entertainment Tonight the reshoots were focused on "some additional action stuff."

"Suicide Squad" is scheduled for release on August 5.

Despite the widespread criticism of "Dawn of Justice," the DC universe marches on, with "Wonder Woman" set for release in June 2017 and part one of a two-part "Justice League" saga due in theaters in late 2017.

"Justice League," helmed by "Dawn of Justice" and "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder, is scheduled to begin shooting this week.
