New DVD, Blu-ray and digital release highlights for the week of May 24-30, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The digital debut releases (rather than the day-and-date releases that come with the release of physical product) for the next couple of weeks appear to be scant (nearly nonexistent) but the DVD and Blu-ray half of the equation offers some interesting options.

• Supernatural: The Complete Series - Sometime around the sixth or so season of "Supernatural" the series was recommended to me. I wasn't opposed to a show that followed two brothers as they hunted a variety of supernatural creatures. The time commitment, however, was daunting. I committed to watch the show once the series ended. Little did I know that Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) would be fighting demons for another decade. So, here we are staring at a 15-season box set containing 327 episodes of magic and wonder. I'll be jumping into the 1967Chevrolet Impala and heading towards the horizon and the end of all things.
  
  
• Infinity Train: Book Two -"Infinity Train" is set on a long, seemingly-endless train. The second season, known as "Book Two: Cracked Reflection " is a magical experience that follows Mirror Tulip (the reflection of the first book's main character) as she helps Jesse, a new passenger on the train, discover his courage. Creator Owen Dennis previously worked on Cartoon Network's "Regular Show."
  
  
• Chaos Walking - Yesterday I tried to explain "Chaos Walking" to my co-workers. The short version is that Todd (Tom Holland) lives in a world filled only with men. These men are unable to mask their thoughts. When Todd stumbles upon the debris of a crash spaceship containing Viola (Daisy Ridley), his whole world is turned on its ear. "Chaos Walking" is something of a cinematic train wreck where talented people (Doug Liman directs,Patrick Ness worked on the screenplay, Demián Bichir plays a supporting role) fall short of their potential.
  
  
• Happily -Kerry Bishé and Joel McHale star in this dark, abstract comedy about a married couple who discover the happy life they have been living might not actually be real.
  
  
• Long Weekend - "Long Weekend" is a romantic drama that follows a struggling musician(Finn Wittrock) and his newfound and mysterious muse (Zoë Chao). There's a touch of sci-fi thrown in to keep you off balance.

• Super 8 4K UHD - Directed by J.J. Abrams, "Super 8" is a homage to the Steven Spielberg film of the 1980s as it follows a group of kids as they set out to make a no-budget films and find themselves in the middle of something strange and possibly supernatural. It's a bit derivative (Abrams doesn't often have new ideas) but I enjoyed the spirit of the film and this 4K upgrade is as close to flawless as you get. Improved detail, and color and a fantasticDolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless soundtrack.
  
  
• My Fair Lady 4K UHD - In 2015, Paramount released a beautiful "50th Anniversary" Blu-ray of "My Fair Lady." It looked and sounded wonderful but with the introduction of 4K UHD I couldn't help but wonder if there was still improvement that could be found in a higher resolution and expanded color range. I needn't wonder any longer as the film's 4K UHD debut is simply stunning. There is amazing clarity to the image but it still retains the beautiful texture of something shot on film. Perfect? Might be.
  
  
• Nightmare Alley - You can't stray too deeply into the rabbit hole that is 1947's "Nightmare Alley" without stumbling upon words like "scandalous," "sordid" or "depraved." You'll also find the phrase, "misunderstood classic." Currently being remade byGuillermo del Toro, the film sees Stanton Carlisle, an unscrupulous carnival worker, teaming up with a psychiatrist in a scam to convince Chicago's wealthy that he can speak to the dead. For a price, of course. It's devilishly good.
  
  
• Django 4K UHD - Considered as one of the finest spaghetti westerns ever made, "Django" was released in 1966, launched the career ofFranco Nero and spawned dozens of unofficial sequels (and a Quentin Tarantino film). Know as a more violent version of "A Fist Full of Dollars" (both films were inspired byAkira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo") follows the wandering gunman dressed in a worn Union uniform as he aids a woman caught between rival factions along the Mexico–United States border.
  
  
• Deliver Us From Evil -Hong Won-Chan's film sees an assassin travel to Thailand to investigate a kidnapping only to find himself hunted by a man seeking revenge on the assassin for the killing of his siblings.
  
  
• The Final Countdown 4K UHD - Released in 1980, "The Final Countdown" sees a modernnuclear-powered-aircraft carrier sent back in time to the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Do they change the course of history or stay out of the fight altogether? The film is known most for the complete cooperation of the navy who allowed film crews to document real maneuvers.
  
  
• Ponette - There's a slight bit of magical reality in this beautiful French film about a young girl who in the wake of her mother's death is force to consider the existence of God and the afterlife. It features one of the best child performances in the history of cinema byVictoire Thivisol. She was only 4 years old,
  
  
• City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold - Following up on the success of 1991's "City Slickers,""The Legend of Curly's Gold" was released in 1994. It's more of apanache for those who love the original film than it is a must-own.
  
  
• Explorers -Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix made their film debuts in the 1985 sci-fi fantasy "Explorers." The story focuses on three friends who build a spacecraft based on one of they boy's dreams. I remember seeing the movie in theaters when I was 9 years old and loving the magic of it all. I haven't watched it since. Maybe it's time for a little nostalgia.
