NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Content streaming and DVD rental behemoth Netflix has announced they are getting out of the DVD game and customers who still use the option will be able to keep any DVDs received from the company.
The company announced on Monday they are shutting down their DVD rental service with the last DVDs to be mailed through the subscription service on September 29. After the deadline, anyone with a DVD will be able to keep the disc if they so choose.
In an FAQ explaining the move, Netflix states "You will not be charged for any unreturned discs - please enjoy them for as long as you like! If you do choose to return the disc, we will continue to accept returns until October 27th, 2023."
Customers have until August 28 to sign up or rejoin the DVD rental service and the service will be canceled on September 29.
Explaining the move, the company says "After an incredible 25-year run, we've made the difficult decision to wind down at the end of September. Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members, but as the DVD business continues to shrink, that's going to become increasingly difficult. Making 2023 our Final Season allows us to maintain our quality of service through the last day and go out on a high note."
