WASHINGTON (SBG) — Miley Cyrusrevealed in an interview that she's been sober for six months.

The 27-year-old singer told Variety she got "sober sober" after having vocal cord surgery at the end of last year.

Cyrus, who has been open about smoking marijuana in the past, said her decision to get sober was initially just about the surgery.

Her recovery included a four-week period where she wasn't allowed to speak. As the weeks went on, Cyrus said she started reflecting on her family history, which includes mental health challenges and addiction.

"My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable. My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself," Cyrus said in an interview with Variety.

"I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, 'Why am I the way that I am?'"

Cyrus goes on to say the key to understanding the present is understanding the past, describing the process in positive terms by saying, "I think therapy is great."
