Mariah Carey’s 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' shatters another record
It’s no surprise that Mariah Carey’s holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” tops the charts every year in December, but this year it’s surpassed another milestone.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” is now officially the longest-running No. 1 song in Billboard chart history, thanks to its incredible dominance at the top of the Hot 100 for 20 total weeks this year.
Carey’s 1994 hit that keeps on giving has surpassed the record that was previously held by Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" and more recently Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)." Lil Nas X held the record for 19 weeks in 2019 and Shaboozey did the same in 2024.
But the Queen of Christmas is the one to reign supreme!
Since its debut, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has sold over 50 million copies and is certified 18-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It has also boosted sales of the album it came from, “Merry Christmas,” pushing it into Diamond status (meaning over 10 million units have been sold).
But it wasn’t until 2019 that it topped the Billboard Hot 100, the first year recurrent songs were allowed to be counted.
Carey, who co-wrote the song, reflected on its success in a 2023 interview with ABC, recalling, "I was working on it by myself ... on this little Casio keyboard and writing down words and thinking about, 'What do I think of at Christmas? What do I love? What do I want? What do I dream of?’ And that's what started it."
She continued, "My goal was to do something timeless, so it didn't feel like the '90s, which is when I wrote it.”
