ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. (KATU) – The ski film industry lost a legend Wednesday evening. Warren A. Miller died at his home on Orcas Island, Washington. He was 93.

The iconic filmmaker introduced generations to the thrills and freedom of skiing and outdoor adventures.

His annual film releases kicked off the ski season for more than 60 years.

Miller was known for his droll narration and humor.

Although he’s known by most as the original ski bum, Miller also created films on surfing, sailing and other water sports. He wrote more than 1,200 columns and 11 books.

Miller was also a World War II veteran.

He led a life of adventure, even into his 80s and 90s, when he spent his final years working philanthropically and training youth around the world.
