For at least a year, the titles leaving Netflix list has shrunk dramatically as the streamer has shifted its focus away from catalog titles in favor of original content – I use the word “original” lightly. So, I was half tempted to not even look at the list this month. I’m glad I did.

“The Last Days” is an incredibly important film that sees five Holocaust survivors returning to the concentration camps where they were once imprisoned. I know that we live in a time when it is easier to look away, rather than approaching the darker aspects of human history, but looking away was a major contributor to the Holocaust. The refusal to acknowledge the past endangers the future. Ignorance facilitates hate.

On a lighter note, you could also watch the delightful coming-of-age drama “The Edge of Seventeen” with Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson, or take on Gore Verbinski’s fantastic animated western “Rango.”

The Last Days

Studio Synopsis: Academy Award-winning Documentary Feature, "The Last Days," presented by Steven Spielberg and USC Shoah Foundation. The film traces the compelling experiences of five Hungarian Holocaust survivors who fell victim to Adolf Hitler’s brutal war against the Jews during the final days of World War II. The film shares the remarkable stories of five people – a grandmother, a teacher, a businessman, an artist, and a U.S. congressman – as they return from the United States to their hometowns and to the ghettos and concentration camps that once imprisoned them. Through the eyes of the survivors and other witnesses, including a former Nazi doctor at Auschwitz, "The Last Days" recounts one of the most brutal chapters of human history. But above all, "The Last Days" is a potent depiction of personal strength and courage, and a testament to the power of the human spirit. (Leaving 5/18/23)

The Edge of Seventeen

Studio Synopsis:Two high school girls are best friends until one dates the other's older brother, who is totally his sister's nemesis. (Leaving 5/31/23)

Rango

Studio Synopsis: When he becomes lost in the deseert, pet chameleon Rango pretends he's a tough guy and ends up sheriff of a corrupt and violent frontier town. (Leaving 5/31/23)
