Last Call: Titles leaving Netflix in June 2019

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - The list of titles leaving Netflix in June includes numerous direct-to-video Disney films, a crop of horror films and a few all-time classics. Here are five I recommend checking out before they leave.

"Cold in July"

DirectorJim Mickle and frequent collaborator writer/actorNick Damici know how to stretch a dollar. Their low-budget adventures always look twice as good as anyone else's work form a similar budget. Based on Joe R. Lansdale's novel, "Cold in July" is a thriller that finds a father (Michael C. Hall) trying to protect his family after shooting and killing an intruder in his home that turns out to be the son of a known criminal (Sam Shepard) who vows revenge.

"Kill Bill: Vol. 1"

While I do tend to enjoy most Quentin Tarantino films, "Kill Bill: Volume 1" is easily my favorite as it pays tribute to Asian cinema with a unhinged story about a woman (the wonderfulUma Thurman) who embarks on a journey seeking revenge on a group of assassins who tried to kill her and her unborn child. The second volume (which is also leaving) isn't nearly on par with the first, but as far as I'm concerned, this is Tarantino at his zenith.

"District 9"

In the wake of the disappointing "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,"Neill Blomkamp's "District 9" was the biggest and most welcomed surprise of 2009. Set in an alternate historyJohannesburg, South Africa, where an alien race lives in an dilapidated shantytown known as District 9. The local human population has come to despise the foreign population, viewing them as parasites. With rising tensions, it is decided that the inhabitants of District 9 must be moved out of the city. Things get crazy.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

While I still insist that the film should have had more Yondu and doesn't quite measure up to the original, there's a lot of fun still to be found in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" as Star Lord learns that his father is Ego, acelestial being.

"Apocalypse Now"

Francis Ford Coppola sets his adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness" against the backdrop of the war in Vietnam and the result is one of the most memorable and influential war films ever made. There are two (soon to be three) official versions of the film and a workprint version. This is the original theatrical (153 minute) release.

"The Pianist" tells the true story of Wadysaw Szpilman, a Polish-Jewish pianist, who endured the Nazi occupation of Poland with the unexpected help from a German soldier with a great appreciation for Szpilman's musical talent. Not an easy watch, but war should never be.Adrien Brody won an Academy Award (and numerous other prizes) for his performance as Szpilman.
