Last call: Titles leaving Netflix in December 2019

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - While I'd rather be talking about what is new or coming soon to Netflix ("The Irishman," "Marriage Story" and "Two Popes" to name a few), we'll take a quick look at what is leaving the streaming platform by the end of 2019.

Here are ten titles that you should consider watching this Thanksgiving week and on through the holiday season.

Planet Earth II

There are numerous BBC documentaries that are set to leave Netflix on December 2. "Planet Earth II" just so happens to be my favorite of the lot as it explores the corners of our planet that aren't often visited by humankind. (Leaving 12/2/19)

Thor: Ragnarok

Third time is the charm for the Thor franchise as director Taika Waititi injects a sense of humor into the Norse God's story. Stalwarts Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki) are joined a supporting cast that bringsCate Blanchett (Hela), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster),Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) into the fold. Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

"The Last Jedi" left certain members of the Star Wars universe upending their fandom, but if you're going to be watching "The Rise of Skywalker" on December 20, you probably should refresh your memory or sit down with the film for the first time. There are a few awkward stretches of comedy, but I like the overall story, particularly Luke Skywalker's part in the narrative. (Leaving 12/25/19)

About a Boy

"About a Boy" sees directors Chris and Paul Weitz collaborate withvintage Hugh Grant, Toni Collette and a young Nicholas Hoult in an adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel about a man who is forced to learn to be responsible by a 12-year-old boy. What's not to love? (Leaving 12/31/19)

Billy Elliot

Jamie Bell stars in Stephen Daldry's "Billy Elliot," the story of am 11-year-old boy who discovers a love for ballet. This doesn't sit well with his widower father.(Leaving 12/31/19)

Rocky

The first five films in Sylvester Stallone's Rocky franchise are scheduled to leave at the end of the month. The first film is an enduring classic; the first three sequels have their nostalgic qualities. The less said about the fifth film the better. (Leaving 12/31/19)

Schindler's List

It would seem that we have learned very little from history and the further we move from the atrocities of World War II the more important Stephen Spielberg's "Schindler's List" becomes. It is a story of courage in the face of immeasurable hate. Oskar Schindler runs a factory that uses Jewish prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration camp. In time, Schindler becomes to worry for the fate of his workers and goes to great lengths to protect them from the Nazis. (Leaving 12/31/19)

The Dark Crystal

The weird, wonderful world of Jim Henson's "The Dark Crystal" is populated entirely by puppets. The story centers on the strange, corrupted and withered creatures known as the Skeksis and the pure, elf-like Gelfling. I vividly remember watching this in theaters when it was released in 1982. It was magical and more than a little frightening. Netflix recently produced a prequel series "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" that is equally worthy of your time. (Leaving 12/31/19)

White Christmas

There are numerous Christmas films that will be disappearing from Netflix over the holiday season. The best of the lot is "White Christmas," a song-and-dance comedy featuring Bing Crosby andDanny Kaye as WWII veterans try to help save their former commander's Vermont lodge.Rosemary Clooney co-stars. Winter's Bone

I was among those who saw Jennifer Lawrence, then a completely unknown actress, in Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and knew that we were looking at something special. I had no idea that she'd become one of the world's most famous actresses soon thereafter. This film sees Lawrence starring as a teen living in the Ozark Mountains who is on the verge of losing her home when her drug-dealing father skips bail. (Leaving 12/31/19)
