Kanye: 'My eyes are now wide open I am distancing myself from politics'

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — Kanye West appeared to distance himself Tuesday from some of the political allies he has attracted since becoming an outspoken advocate for President Donald Trump’s agenda, and he suggested he may be ready to step back from his controversial foray into politics.

“My eyes are now wide open and now realize I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in. I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative !!!” West tweeted somewhat cryptically.

He specifically indicated conservative activist Candace Owens falsely connected him with her “Blexit” campaign, which urges traditionally-Democratic black voters to support President Trump.

“I introduced Candace to the person who made the logo and they didn’t want their name on it so she used mine. I never wanted any association with Blexit. I have nothing to do with it,” West wrote after Owens began selling t-shirts and hats purportedly designed by him.

West recently drew national media attention with an extended sit-down with President Trump in the Oval Office in which he praised Trump, described his “Make America Great Again” hat as his “Superman cape,” and defended his own mental health. He also suggested he may run for president after Trump leaves office.

In a series of tweets Tuesday, West called for “love and compassion” for asylum-seekers as President Trump ordered thousands active-duty troops to the southern border in response to a caravan of migrants slowly moving through Mexico who intend to apply for asylum if they reach the U.S.

West also expressed support for "common-sense gun laws" and efforts to hold law enforcement officers accountable for abuses of power.

“I would like to thank my family, loved ones, and community for supporting my ACTUAL beliefs and my vision for a better world,” West wrote.
