It's taco time: 'Deadpool 2' kills the Marvel Universe, again

Weekend box office -- May 18-20, 2018

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - Just like in the comics, every so often an anti-hero rises from obscurity and takes down the headlining act. Deadpool has, once again, defeated the likes of Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor and even Thanos to sit in the box office throne.

While the numbers weren’t nearly as astronomical as some had predicted, “Deadpool 2” had a massive weekend as the outcast superhero brought in $125 million. That’s just short of the $132 million that the original film opened to in 2016.

Internationally, “Deadpool 2” had an equally impressive opening as it earned an additional $176 million for a worldwide total of $301 million.

Still, much to the dismay of our friend in red, we do need to talk about “Avengers: Infinity War” as the film added $28.7 million domestically and an additional $84 million abroad for a worldwide total of $1.8 billion. A huge chunk of the international numbers comes courtesy of China where the film has now earned $302 million.

Of course, the big winner here is Josh Brolin, who has prominent, though radically different, roles in both “Infinity War” and “Deadpool 2.”

Paramount’s “Book Club,” a comedy that stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, finished the weekend with $12.5 million, an appealing total just ahead of most estimates.

Melissa McCarthy’s “Life of the Party” fell 57 percent in its second week with only $7.7 million. The comedy has now earned $31 million domestically.

“Breaking In” also saw a major drop as the action drama fell 63 percent with its weekend haul of $6.4 million for a domestic total of $28.75 million. Considering the film only cost $6 million to make, I don’t think anyone at Universal is feeling too disappointed.

In other Marvel news, "Black Panther" fell out of the top 10 for the first time and will have to settle with a worldwide total of $1.3 billion.
