SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Here we are again, looking out over the passing of another year. If it weren't for the monthly Netflix articles, I'd probably feel like I'm standing still without any evidence to suggest otherwise. Hopefully 2022 with be a little more diverse. Since it looks like we'll be spending January indoors, let's take a look at what Netflix is offering us.
Here's a look at Netflix's sizzle reel for January:
Here's what I'm looking forward to:
The House
I love stop-motion animation and Netflix is touting "The House" as a eccentric dark comedy. It doesn't look like it will be nearly as bent as the work of the Brothers Quay, Bolex Brothers, orJan Svankmajer, but it does appear to be at least as creepy and strange as Wes Anderson's "Isle of Dogs." I'll go down that rabbit hole. (Available 1/14/22)
Honestly, there's not much else in January that has me too excited. "The Wasteland" (Available January 6) could be interesting.
So, let's try a stream-of-consciousness journey through the previously released films arriving in January.
If you're looking for an academic exercise, you could watch and compare and contrast Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Mel Stuart's "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." Though both are based on Roald Dahl's novel and essentially tell the same story, but the perspectives (as the titles suggest) are different enough to allow for a healthy debate over what is the better adaptation and what is the better film. Both films return to Netflix on January 1.
You could continue the Burton marathon with "Big Fish," the director's whimsical take on Daniel Wallace's novel; or pay tribute to Anne Rice, who passed away in early December, by watching "Interview with the Vampire;""I Love You, Man" is a solid, vulgar buddy comedy; "300" introduced the world to Gerard Butler and acquainted director Zack Snyder's with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures; "Braveheart" is despised by the Scottish; David Fincher's take on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is excessively brutal and underrated; "Hell or High Water" is a solid neo-western from writerTaylor Sheridan ("Yellowstone"); "Gremlins" is the best Christmas movie ever made; "ScaryStories to Tell in the Dark" is a good PG-13 horror film; "Stand By Me" is a timeless classic; "Taxi Driver" is still a punch to the gut; "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" is unquestionably the best film of the franchise; as a child I was accused of having a crush on Tami Stronach, The Childlike Empress in "The EverEnding Story;" and The Coen brothers' "True Grit" is a great remake.
Elsewhere, "Ozark" is returning with its fourth season. I've yet to watch any of the first three seasons. I still need to watch the second season of "The Witcher," "Cobra Kai," and the impending madness of the Sundance Film Festival makes it unlikely that I'll have time to catch up. I'll be falling further behind. Or, if you prefer the optimistic perspective, I have four seasons of "Ozark" to look forward to at some point in my life.
Lastly, "The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman" doesn't have anything to do with Charles Band's horror films. That's both reassuring and depressing at the same time.
