Google celebrates Scooby Doo's Velma being LGBT with special confetti

WASHINGTON (TND) — It seems Google is a fan of the recent news that Velma Dinkley, a member of the beloved cartoon mystery-solving Scooby Doo gang, isn't heterosexual.

When internet users search "Velma" using Google's search engine, a celebration occurs. Confetti falls from the top of the webpage, featuring both LGBT Pride and Lesbian flags.

If users want to repeat the celebration, a small button that has appeared at the bottom of the page will trigger it again.

Fans of the now-canonical LGBT Velma noticed the change and took to social media to share their joy.

if you spam the little button at the bottom you can lag your phone with gay and i love that," said one Twitter user.

I LOVE GAY PEOPLE," said another Twitter user while featuring a screenshot of the confetti in effect.

The news of Velma's canonically new LGBT designation came after the release of a new animated Halloween movie starring the Scooby Doo gang.

In the scene from the straight-to-home movie "Trick-or-Treat, Scooby-Doo!," Velma visibly blushes when seeing another female character, named "Coco Diablo," who is currently in a previous-villain-turned-ally role with the gang.

The movie highlights Velma's perceived crush on Coco in the scene by listing all the qualities Velma presumably finds attractive about her. "Amazing turtleneck," "incredible glasses" and "Loves animals" are all listed as positive traits Velma sees in CoCo.

As Velma stares at CoCo, her cheeks redden and her glasses steam up. She then softly says her catchphrase "Jinkies."

Later on in the movie, Velma admits to her teammate Daphne Blake that she's "crushing hard" on Coco, pleading with her friend for help, asking "What do I do? What do I say?"

The movie's synopsis says that Coco is "the head of the notorious costume crime syndicate" who the gang has recently tracked down and defeated. However, a new plot arises, and the Scooby Doo gang has to team up with "their unlikely new partner" Coco to solve the fresh new mystery and "save Halloween."

Velma apparently has a history of crushing on other characters, male or female. She famously hit on both cartoon muscleman Johnny Bravo and a cartoon version of Supernatural's Sam Winchester when they met during their respective crossovers. Velma has also hinted in past Scooby Doo movies that she finds women attractive, but nothing was concretely shown until now.

Velma is already slated to get her own spin-off cartoon series on HBO Max, with that one being more "adult" than kid-friendly. Comedian and writer Mindy Kaling will be voicing Velma in the HBO Max show.
