From rags to rhinestones, country superstar Dolly Parton turns 74

WASHINGTON (SBG) -- Singer songwriterDolly Parton turned 74 on Sunday. Born the fourth child of 12, her official website saysshe grew up in Locust Ridge, nestled against the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

The typical saying is from "rags to riches" but in Parton's case, it's more of a "rags-to-rhinestones story." The country superstar is still working "9 to 5," and doing what she loves. Her trademark style (hair as high as Heaven and heels almost as tall) is recognized around the world; her talent earning her recognitions and awards for decades.

Parton is one of the few people to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. In 2004, she earned the distinguished Living Legend Award from the U.S. Library of Congress.

Two years later, she was given theprestigious Kennedy Center Honors, but she didn't stop there. Five years after that, she was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Parton's recent collaboration with KING & COUNTRYearned her a 2020 Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song."

She's also up for "Best Song Written For Visual Media" for her tune “Girl in the Movies" played in the Netflix film "Dumplin'," based on the novel by Julie Murphy.

“What incredible news to be nominated for two Grammy Awards!" Parton said in a statement. "It is always such a sweet thing when your peers recognize and celebrate the music you make. To have a nomination with Linda Perry for ‘Girl In The Movies,’ the song we wrote together for Dumplin’ means so much. And then to share another with my new friends Joel and Luke Smallbone from for KING & COUNTRY on our duet ‘God Only Knows’well, I am one happy girl today!”

So far, Parton has earned 49 Grammy nominations and has taken home eight Grammys. The 2020 Grammy Awards are set to take place Jan. 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
