There’s a lot going on in Marvel’s upcoming “Eternals,” and the latest trailer for Chloe Zhao’s superhero epic does what it can to explain the situation.

The Eternals are superpowered beings created by the godlike Celestials thousands of years ago to protect humanity from the Deviants, ancient monsters that look kind of like dragons. The characters were developed by writer-artist Jack Kirby in the 1970s, but they remain one of his lesser-known creations.

According to the trailer, the events of the last two Avengers films, in which half of the planet was erased and then resurrected, appear to have triggered a new Deviant threat. The Eternals, who were instructed not to interfere in human conflicts unless the Deviants are involved, gather to save the world for the first time in centuries.

"The sudden return of the population provided the necessary energy for the emergence to begin," Salma Hayek’s Ajak states. Whatever “the emergence” is, it’s happening in seven days and it’s obviously not good.

Zhao, the director of last year’s Academy Award-winning “Nomadland,” brings together a cast that includes Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, and “Game of Thrones” veterans Richard Madden and Kit Harington. The film, which spans centuries and galaxies, is set to hit theaters on Nov. 5.
