PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WCYB) — Dollywood might be closed, but even in the off-season, the park is full of people.
Construction crews are working on transforming the Adventures and Imagination section of the park into a brand new Dolly Parton experience.
It's slated to open this May, with several interactive elements to make guests feel as if they were alongside Parton as she journeyed from Locust Ridge to stages around the world.
"I can't even begin to tell you about the excitement around this project," said VP of Guest Experience Cyndi McCormack. "It is the most meaningful project I’ve done in my entire career."
In this new area, guests will discover three distinct experiences, each uniquely crafted to tell Dolly's story. Additionally, a brand-new merchandise location will be available.
I want this experience to exude Dolly's essence in every way," said McCormack.
Dollywood President Eugene Naughton said they're also focusing on adding new technology elements to the park.
"We're adding QR codes that you often find throughout national museums across the United States, that will tie back to our app and allow for continuous storytelling even when they leave the experience here," he said.
Music lovers will also be excited for three brand new shows, with one paying tribute to Dolly's album Trio, with Emmy Lou Harris andLinda Ronstadt.
Naughton said every decision they make is made with Parton at the forefront.
There's been a lot of evolution in terms of her consumer base, people that are visiting Dollywood are demanding more, and there's never a bad thing when you talk about doing more Dolly," he said.
As for thrill seekers, the Lightning Rod roller coaster is also going through a $4 million renovation, and a new high-speed chain is being added to improve guest experience with the ride.
“It takes up time to nearly 99 percent, and a million more people a year will get to experience Lightning Rod because it's open, and that’s the way it should be.”
These renovations are all part of Dollywood's 10-year plan. Naughton also announced a new outdoor resort opening in 2028, with details to come soon.
The Dolly Parton Experience will open in May 2024, and Lightning Rod is expected to open in mid-March.
Dollywood will welcome guests for their 2024 season on March 8.
