DC Universe streaming service sets pricing plan for digital subscription
WASHINGTON (Circa) — DC Universe and Warner Bros. Digital Networks have announced the initial pricing plan for the upcoming streaming service, which will feature original programming, classic and obscure DC Comics movies and animated series, and a “curated” selection of digital comics.
When it debuts this fall, annual subscriptions for DC Universe will cost $74.95, with three additional months free. Customers can also opt for a $7.99 per month plan. The plans are available for pre-order now, but no launch date has been set.
The announcement came on the first full day of the San Diego Comic-Con. More DC entertainment news is expected in the days ahead, including a trailer for the "Aquaman" film.
DC Universe's first direct-to-streaming series will be the live-action “Titans,” starring Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, the original Robin. A broody and bloody trailer for the show was released Thursday, with Thwaites in Robin costume at one point stating, “F*** Batman” when a group of thugs question where his mentor is.
Executive producer and writer Geoff Johns has attempted to put that jarring moment in context for fans of the comic, which featured a team of teen heroes and former sidekicks trying to make a name for themselves.
“If you look at when Robin first left Batman in the comics, there was a lot of uneasiness and him being lost,” Johns told Polygon. “Titans is really a series about these different characters that are all lost in their lives; just like the greatest comic book Titans run ever, by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, it’s about all these lost characters find one another. And they’re all struggling with something, and Robin is clearly struggling with his past with Batman.”
DC also revealed Thursday that Johns and Greg Berlanti, producer of five shows based on the company’s properties currently airing on the CW, are developing a new live-action series featuring teen hero Stargirl.
Other original series previously announced to appear on the DC Universe service in 2019 and beyond will feature Harley Quinn, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing.
