Dave Chappelle set to host benefit concert for Dayton shooting victims

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/ WRGT)- The Oregon District is a place to shop, grab a bite to eat and spend time with family and friends, and the city of Dayton is making sure nothing takes that away, even a horrific act of violence.

"We're not going to let fear win, we're not going to let fear take over our lives,” said Val Beerbower, with Downtown Dayton Partnership.

It's been nearly three weeks since a gunman killed nine people and wounded 27 others in the district.

"After you get over the shock this happened in our city, it was very heartwarming to see the support and all the people coming here,” said Debbie Stricker.

Amelia O’Dowd, the owner of Brim, says it's humbling.

"Dayton is really making a big effort to rise up even stronger and more resilient than ever, which is what we are as a city,” said O’Dowd.

There have been fundraisers and events all across Dayton to help the victims of the shooting and their families, and another one is set for Sunday: Gem City Shine, hosted by Yellow Springs resident and comedian Dave Chappelle.

"It's a place where he and his family, just like many of us who live here in Dayton, spend a lot of our time,” Beerbower said.

Ohioan John Legend visited the Oregon District on August 11.

"I think it's really neat that John Legend and Dave Chappelle have supported Dayton and reached out to do what they can do, and that says a lot,” Bob Stricker said.

While local businesses prepare for 20,000 people to flood the district, the healing process isn't over.

"We're definitely still in shock and still hurting,” said O’Dowd.

She said, as time passes, they will be able to look back and feel even better about all the support.

“But I think right now we're all just struggling to get through each day a little bit,” O’Dowd said.

The event is to support businesses in the district and raise money for the Dayton Foundation's Oregon District Tragedy Fund.
