'Dances with Wolves' star and Oscar-nominee Graham Greene dead at 73
Graham Greene, a prolific actor known for roles in films like “Dances with Wolves,” has died at age 73.
Greene died Monday, September 1, in a Toronto hospital after a long illness Deadline reported.
His agent, Michael Greene, said in a statement to the outlet, “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character, and will be eternally missed.”
The statement added, “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” referring to Greene’s longtime agent who died in 2013.
Greene was a trailblazing Canadian First Nations actor, born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve.
He started his career in theater and made his television debut in a 1979 episode of “The Great Detective” and his feature film debut in “Running Brave” in 1983.
Greene’s breakthrough role came in the Kevin Costner-directed “Dances with Wolves” in 1990, playing Kicking Bird (Zitká Nagwáka). He earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category, one of the film’s 12 nominations. “Dances with Wolves” took home seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
He appeared in other films soon after, like “Maverick” with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, “Die Hard with a Vengeance” alongside Bruce Willis, and “The Green Mile” with Tom Hanks.
Greene also made many television appearances, including Taylor Sheridan’s series “1883” and “Tulsa King.”
According to Deadline, Greene worked until the end, with an upcoming role in the film “Ice Killer,” yet to be released.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore, daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene and grandson Tarlo.
