Coming to Netflix May 2018
(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY- With May comes warmer weather and days that stretch further into the night. Should you find yourself in need of cooling off or winding down from a fantastic adventure, here's a look at what Netlfix is bringing us this month.
Some of the obvious highlights include Pixar’s “Coco,” and “Mamma Mia” for those getting ready for the sequel. Here are a few other titles that caught my eye.
P.S. Hey Netflix, you had me at "Toys the Made Us" and "Trollhunters;" the additional titles are simply cherries on top.
Amélie
“Delicatessen” and “The City of Lost Children” were two of my favorite films and while director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Alien: Ressurection” was something of a disaster, I couldn’t have been more excited when “Amélie” was released in 2001. A generation of cinema nerds have been in love with Audrey Tautou ever since. Tautou stars as the title character, a young woman who spent most of her youth in a fantasy world. Now, a young adult, Amélie discovers the joy of helping people that surround her overcome their greatest obstacles. The perfect movie for rainy days desperately in need of sunshine.
Beautiful Girls
Once upon a time I discovered that Natalie Portman, who I knew primarily as Queen Amidala, and I had the same birthday. As a result, I became curious and made my way through her previous films. I had seen “Mars Attacks!,” but classics like “Léon: The Professional” and “Heat” were new to me. Portman had a small role in “Beautiful Girls,” a romantic drama from director Ted Demme starring Matt Dillon, Lauren Holly, Mira Sorvino (also a favorite) and Uma Thurman. The film sees a successful jazz pianist (Timothy Hutton) returning from New York City to his hometown where all of his childhood friends have remained.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
It’s no secret that I’m a huge Guillermo del Toro fan and “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is nothing short of a fantastic popcorn film bursting at the seams with some of the best art design that any action film as ever seen. I know that sounds like hyperbole, but this movie is gorgeous. It’s also a lot of fun and will clue you into why some people were so upset when it was announced that they were rebooting the franchise rather than giving del Toro the green light to wrap up his trilogy. For those unfamiliar, Hellboy (Ron Pearlman)is a half-demon superhero who takes on Nazis and black magic with some help from an amphibian humanoid (Doug Jones) and a woman with pryrokinetic abilities (Selma Blair) .
The Toys That Made Us: Season 2-- NETFLIX ORIGINAL
The first season of “The Toys That Made Us,” a documentary series that tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how legendary toy lines came to be, focused on Star Wars, Barbie, G.I. Joe and He-Man. This new season explore Transformers, Hello Kitty, LEGO and Star Trek. (Arriving 5/25/18)
Trollhunters: Part 3-- NETFLIX ORIGINAL
“Trollhunters,” an animated series from Guillermo del Toro, focuses on an unlikely hero, who is asked to bring balance the world. It’s simplistic and familiar, but it is also a lot of fun and is as likely to appear to adults as it is to children. This third season is scheduled to be the last, but “Trollhunters” is just the cornerstone of a much larger animated universe under the banner of “The Tales of Arcadia” that del Toro is developing with DreamWorks. Look for “3 Below” and “Wizards” to continue to continue the story over the next couple of years. (Arriving 5/25/18)
