(KUTV) February is upon us and that means a whole new slate of titles are poised to come to Netflix including a few old classic films and a massive amount of original content.
Here are a few titles that caught my attention.
I've always preferred the first half ofQuentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill: Volume 1" to the second volume (which is also coming to Netflix, so you can judge for yourself) because it felt more cohesive and worked as a stand-alone story. "Kill Bill: Volume 2" always felt a bit too fragmented, like it was pieced together from the leftover parts. It doesn't hurt that I'm a sucker for genre films that lean heavily upon Asian cinematic influences. There are a couple nods to the Orient in "Volume 2," but it is mostly dominated by Tarantino's Italian influences. That said, I haven't watched either film in quite some time. This is a chance to rectify that.
With "Oceans 8" scheduled to arrive in June featuring an amazing female cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway,Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Munn, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson and numerous others, so why not go back to the Steven Soderbergh's "Ocens Eleven."a remake of the 1960 heist classic (sadly not on Netflix) from 2001 with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts? It's sequels, "Oceans Twelve" and "Oceans Thirteen" will also be available on Netflix come February 1, 2018.
Winner of 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, director Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" is an intense drama about an American bomb squad during the Iraq War. At the time no one really knew who Jeremy Renner or even Anthony Mackie were.
Seeing as I've never watched "Walk Hard," this is more of a personal reminder to check out this satire starringJohn C. Reilly, and a down-and-out musician who rises above his self-destructive behavior to become a beloved icon. I can't tell you how many times the film has been recommended to me by critics who have rarely led me astray.
I always enjoyed watching David Letterman, but I didn't realize how much I missed his sense of humor until I watched the first episode his new series "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction." His interview with President Barack Obama flaunted Letterman's talent for talking and showed a bit of vulnerability and humility that he doesn't typically show. Excited to see what antics he shares with George Clooney. (Available 2/9/18)
With Daniel Day-Lewis set to retire from acting following his recent appearance in "Phantom Thread," we'll have to come to terms with his absence by revisiting his back catalog. In "Lincoln," the actor teamed with Steven Spielberg to tell the story of President Abraham Lincoln's concerted effort to abolish slavery. Day-Lewis won an Academy award for his performance. (Available 2/21/18)
Once again, we're straying into the unknown as "Mute," the new film from Duncan Jones ("Moon," "Source Code"), has yet to even release a full trailer. Still photos suggest that this sci-fi film has adopted a 1970s swagger mixed with a "Blade Runner" aesthetic. Set in Berlin 40 years in the future, a mute bartender (Alexander Skarsgård) goes in search of his missing lover. (Available 2/23/18)
