(KUTV) Spring is upon us and while that might mean more time spent outdoors enjoying the warmer weather, there will still be rainy days and late nights spent in front of the television. Here's a look at the titles coming to Netflix in April. From the schlock that is “Battlefield Earth” to the classic psychological frights of “Seven” there’s a little bit of everything for a little bit of everyone.
Here are six titles that caught my eye.
Released in 2003, "Cold Mountain" tells the story of a wounded Civil War soldier who attempts to make his way back home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. It stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman and Renée Zellweger.Zellweger won numerous awards including a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her performance in a supporting role.
"The Duchess" stars Kiera Knightley as Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire in this costume drama that co-stars Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Haykey Atwell and Dominic Cooper. Like many of these stories, we find a young woman, Georgina, married to an older man who isn't nearly as concern with her happiness as he is with her ability to give him an heir. Unfulfilled, Georgiana is forced to look elsewhere for happiness.
One of the greatest travesties in cinematic history is the cold shoulder that audiences gave "The Iron Giant" when it was released in 1999. The film, which tells the story of Hogarth, a young boy with a active imagination, who discovers a giant robot from outer space. Hounded by a government agent, Hogarth hides the robot in a junkyard. Unfortunately, something as big as this mechanical creature, is impossible to keep hidden for long.
. Directed by Brad Bird, who later found success with Pixar's "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille," "The Iron Giant" is simply one of my favorite films.
In 1997 Roberto Benignidid something remarkable with "Life is Beautiful," a film about the Holocaust that was funny without being the least bit disrespectful. Benigni stars as a Jewish librarian who tries to hide the horrors of the German occupation of Italy from his son by reimagining their situation as a game. Remarkable filmmaking.
Digging deeper into the month we have Netflix's remake of the "Lost in Pace" television program from the 1960s. When the series was announced I was rather ambivalent about the idea of rejoining the Robinson family as they, as the title suggests, get lost in space. The trailer, however, has convinced me to give this series a chance. (Available 4/13/18)
I was in college when “The Magic School Bus,” an educational cartoon that found Ms. Frizzle, a school teacher, taking her students on some fairly wild and often bizarre adventures, came to television. I wasn’t exactly the target demographic. So, I don’t remember when or where I first came across the series. It might have not been until 2012 when all four seasons were released in a collector’s box set. Nonetheless, I love the creative insanity of the original episodes. Despite its popularity, the series ended after 52 episodes.
Netflix relaunched the series in 2017, twenty years after the original series ended its run, under the banner of “The Magic School Bus Rides Again.” They brought back many of the original characters, Ms Frizzle is now a professor so her younger sister has taken over most the day-to-day bus duties. Thankfully the show is still bonkers and completely unpredictable while also being educational. I look forward to where the bus will take us next. Apparently, the middle of the sun is on the agenda.
