WASHINGTON (SBG) — Chadwick Boseman's death announcement is officially the most retweeted post of 2020.
The actor died at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. His Twitter account broke the news Aug. 28. Within 24 hours, it became the most-"liked" tweet in the social media giant's history.
And, as of Monday, it was retweeted more than 2 million times – a new record.
In the United States, the second most-tweeted-about celebrity in 2020 was NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who died in a January helicopter crash.
Boseman achieved fame with a series of star-making performances as Jackie Robinson, James Brown and Thurgood Marshall, but it was his role as the groundbreaking superhero “Black Panther” that rocketed him to a new level of stardom.
The actor's illness was largely a secret from almost everyone, making movies between treatments and surgeries.
"The world mourns an actor of immense talent who, like many of his characters, radiated a regal sense of dignity," The Associated Press wrote of him.
Boseman's fans have deeply mourned his death, many saying, "Rest in power, King T'Challa. Wakanda forever."
