Barbie launches new 'Inspiring Women' dolls honoring Rosa Parks, Sally Ride

A beloved toy brand for millions of children has added two dolls to its collection, inspiring little ones to dream bigger than ever before.

Barbie, owned by Mattel Inc., released their "Inspiring Women" series which pays tributes to heroines throughout history. The company announced Monday they've added two new faces: Rosa Parks and Sally Ride.

"We're humbled to welcome two new role models into this important collection," the company said in a press release.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused an order to give up her seat to a white passenger and move to the back of the bus. Her actions proved to be the catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Later hailed as "the Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement," Parks earned worldwide recognition and numerous awards in her 92 years of life.

In 1977, when NASA first began recruiting women into the astronaut corps, Sally Ride was one of six women accepted. There were more than 8,000 applicants at the time. On June 18, 1983, she blasted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger to become the first American woman, and youngest American, to fly in space.

The Rosa Parks doll includes a floral dress, coat, glasses, gloves, pillbox hat and a clutch. Meanwhile, the Sally Ride doll sports a NASA flight suit that models after the one she wore aboard the Challenger. A headset and removable helmet are also included.

Other dolls in the collection include Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, pilot pioneer Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson. Each doll sold comes with their story inside the box and a quote.
