LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) – An "America's Got Talent" contestant who rocketed to fame after getting the golden buzzer from Simon Cowell on her first appearance has died.

Jane Marcweski, also known as Nightbirde, died Saturday at the age of 31 after a long battle with cancer, multiple outlets reported.

She rose to fame after her emotional and encouraging performance on season 16 of "America's Got Talent" last summer, and it didn't take long for the country to learn her name.

The family has set up a program called "The Nightbirde Foundation" in Jane's memory. All proceeds will go to those needing cancer treatment and other organizations helping with cancer research.
